St. Luke’s can trace its roots to post Emancipation Jamaica...

The right to worship was fought for and won and a small group planted a seed of faith under a large tree on the premises where St. Luke’s Church stands today. We give thanks for the landowner who formally offered a portion of the land in 1875, to house the first church building – a wooden chapel.

As the work of the church and the congregation grew, a brick building, with a seating capacity of 360 was built in 1890 and dedicated on St. Luke’s Day (October 18th) to the Evangelist St. Luke. The first two rectors were Rev. H. Seymour Isaacs (1890-1898) and Rev. B.Y Shaul (1898-1902).

Partly destroyed by the earthquake of January 14, 1907, the building was eventually repaired, refurbished and extended, and by 1935, it could comfortably seat 700 worshippers. In that year, a Mission on Hope Road was handed over to St. Luke’s and the work of building the Mission into a church was entrusted to a member, Mr J. Leslie McPherson. This resulted in the dedication of the Church of St Margaret, on January 23, 1938.

In 1958, the Diocesan authorities decided to demolish the old building and erect a new one. An ambitious building programme was launched under the leadership of the then Rector, Venerable Eric L. Maxwell and Archdeacon Emeritus (deceased), and the present building
Was erected. It was dedicated on March 20, 1968.

The Church was consecrated on March 20, 1980, during the incumbency of the Venerable Dr Alvin Stone, Rector of St. Luke’s Church since 1974. As was stated in the Consecration programme:

“We will not forget that the Church is not the building; it is the people of God, called out,  prepared, commissioned and sent to be the mouth, feet and body of Christ in the world of service.”
The bridge that connects the rear of the premises to Brentford Road was a gift from Mr Horace Jones, the then owner of Checker Cabs.

In 2008, the Venerable Dr Alvin Stone was succeeded by the now incumbent leader Archdeacon Patrick Cunningham.

On a Mission For Change Through Ministry

Our mission

To bring people to the knowledge of God, through the proclamation of the gospel, in study, worship and witness, thus creating a fellowship of disciples for ministry and mission.

Our vision

As a member of the Diocese of Jamaica, St Luke’s shares the Vision statement of the Anglican Diocese. “A Diocese inspired by the Holy Spirit, through the joyful energetic discipleship of all its members, is an assertive influence for good and justice always reaching out to engage the wider society through collective and individual mission and ministry, in faith, hope and charity, welcoming inspiring and enrolling new members of the body of Christ as faithful stewards of God’s resources.”

Outreach

The spirit of generosity reigns supreme at St. Luke’s.

Our work in the community.

St. Simon’s Basic School

A flagship outreach project, the school is situated on  Penn Street, Jones Town, Kingston, and provides an education for approximately 150 students. There is a  sponsorship and fundraising committee comprising  members  of St. Luke’s Church which assists with the administration of the school.  A special collection is taken for the school on the first Sunday of each month at the 7:30 a.m service.

St. Luke’s Senior Citizens Residence

Located at 21 Brentford  Road, the home is close to the Church and comprises 12  studio apartments at a low cost to the residents, who are mainly sponsored. The operational expenses for the Home are supplemented by sponsors and  donations.  Donations are welcomed for this outreach.

Ministry to the Poor and Vulnerable

We serve a hot breakfast every Wednesday Morning following the 7:00 a.m. Holy Communion Service. The elderly and needy in the Cross Roads environs are welcomed to our Church Hall each week and provided with hygiene tips in addition to their meals. Each Christmas, beneficiaries receive a hot lunch, a package of groceries and personal care products, and a cash grant. The soup project is an extension of the Breakfast programme and has similar objectives.  Soup is served at midday on alternate Fridays.
